During these uncertain times due to the social distancing and quarantine caused by COVID-19, Studio Ghibli have taken on the role of hero to us all. They have stepped up and offered us all free usage of stills from several of their movies to use as the backgrounds of the video calls we are making to friends and family.

The backgrounds are as follows:

Nausicaa of The Valley of The Wind
Castle in the Sky
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Howl’s Moving Castle
Ponyo
The Secret World of Arriety
The Tale of Princess Kaguya

These are currently the only images that have been submitted for use by Studio Ghibli, with no word on whether they will be including stills from all of their movies, however, the Studio Ghibli website says that images will be added sequentially.

Studio Ghibli have stated that the purpose of these backgrounds being gifted is for personal use of Web / TV conference applications, such as telecommuting, teleworking, and distance learning only. They are not to be used by businesses for commercial purposes or for advertising of companies or products.

This is not the only time that Studio Ghibli have saved us all — they also added almost all of their movies to Netflix for international streaming.
