“The Matrix 4” Breakdown

The Matrix 4 is the most mysterious upcoming movie on Warner Bros.’ slate. Forget the mystery surrounding The Batman, the fact that this movie is happening is nothing short of surprising.

Spoiler Alert; but the original Matrix trilogy ended pretty definitively. Humans win against machines, Agent Smith virus dies, and Neo dies.

Since it was a successful franchise, talk of another Matrix always seemed to come up, but never really materialized into anything substantial until August 20, 2019, when WB officially announced that it was happening. Not only was one of the Wachowskis directing, but Keanu Reeves (Neo), Carrie-Ann Moss (Trinity), and Jada Pinkett Smith (Niobe) are also reprising their roles.

Since that announcement actors like Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, Jonathan Groff, Toby Onwumere, Eréndira Ibarra, Priyanka Chopra, Andrew Caldwell, Brian J. Smith, and Ellen Hollman have been confirmed to be a part of this fourth installment in undisclosed roles.

With an exciting diverse cast, along with the returning veterans, and Lana Wachowski directing, this movie already sounds very intriguing. Unfortunately Lana’s sibling collaborator Lilly couldn’t return, but she gives her blessing.

On the technical side of things, The Matrix 4 seems like it’ll live up to the past three. Academy Award-winning cinematographer John Toll will be behind the camera for this film, so it’ll most likely look great. According to some reports,

It looks like the film will be going back to its more practical roots by the look of these insane recent set photos and videos. The filming has taken over San Francisco, and it looks like the action is aiming to be just as mind-blowing as the original.

At the moment, not much is known about the plot, but that’s okay since the plot of the original Matrix surprised audiences back in 1999. The idea of machines enslaving humans, and humans living in a simulation where they can do whatever they want and defy all physics is an amazing concept.

It’ll be interesting to see how Neo and Trinity return because their stories ended pretty definitively. However it will great to see Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss together again, and the new cast should be fun.

2021 will have a lot of large blockbusters releasing, and it looks like Matrix 4 can be one of the biggest. If it captures the essence of what everyone liked about the original, delivering quality action scenes, and an intriguing story that justifies a continuation than audiences are in for something special.
