Warner Bros. Releases Trailer for ‘King Richard’ Starring Will Smith
Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green, the first official trailer for King Richard released Wednesday afternoon.
The Warner Bros. biopic stars Will Smith as Richard Williams, the hard-nosed father of two of the most decorated tennis stars of all time, Venus and Serena Williams (played by Saniyya Sidney and Demi Singleton respectively). The two-minute trailer begins with what appears to be Child Protective Services visiting the Williams’ residence, with Smith’s Richard explaining that he is purposely hard on his children to push them to success, claiming that it is better than being “out in the streets” of Compton, California. Throughout the trailer, we see Richard training the girls through harsh conditions while still showing them unfiltered love and guidance, through education and recreation. The trailer is indeed aimed to tug on the heart strings and inspire viewers.
The official synopsis reads:
Based on the true story that will inspire the world, “King Richard” follows the journey of Richard Williams, an undeterred father instrumental in raising two of the most extraordinarily gifted athletes of all time, who will end up changing the sport of tennis forever. Driven by a clear vision of their future and using unconventional methods, Richard has a plan that will take Venus and Serena Williams from the streets of Compton, California to the global stage as legendary icons. “King Richard” is a profoundly moving film that shows the power of family, perseverance and unwavering belief as a means to achieve the impossible and impact the world.
