PSA: If You Bought Superman on Blu-ray, You’ll Miss Out on These Key Extras

James Gunn’s Superman is flying home this month, but Blu-ray and 4K buyers are about to discover some major bonus features are being kept digital-only.

If you’ve already pre-ordered James Gunn’s Superman on Blu-ray, 4K UHD, or DVD, especially those gorgeous Steelbooks like I did, brace yourself. Warner Bros. Discovery has confirmed that several of the most anticipated bonus features, including Gunn’s director’s commentary, a gag reel, and deleted scenes, will be exclusive to the digital release.

The news comes as the film, DC Studios’ first big-screen outing in its new continuity, prepares to hit home formats. Superman will debut digitally on August 15, while physical media fans will have to wait until September 23 for the 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions.

While both formats will include a healthy roster of behind-the-scenes content, from featurettes on many of the main characters, the fact that three high-demand extras are being withheld from the disc versions is a kryptonite-sized disappointment for physical media enthusiasts. Gunn’s director’s commentary in particular is likely to be a major draw, as the filmmaker’s blend of humor, honesty, and insider knowledge has made his past commentaries entertaining.

The move reflects an increasingly common studio strategy: incentivizing digital purchases with exclusive content. For collectors who value shelf appeal, packaging, and the higher video/audio fidelity of physical media, this is a frustrating trade-off.

Still, even without those exclusives, the disc editions aren’t exactly barebones. Fans will get over an hour of in-depth featurettes, exploring the film’s production, cast, score, and Superman’s enduring cultural significance.

Release Dates at a Glance:

  • Digital: August 15, 2025
  • 4K UHD / Blu-ray / DVD: September 23, 2025

Whether you choose to double-dip or stick with your pre-order, Superman remains one of the biggest superhero events of the year, both on-screen and at home. Just know: if you want Gunn’s commentary, you’ll have to go digital.
