“Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms” Debuts Action-Packed Trailer

The anticipated sequel to “Scorpion’s Revenge” is just around the corner.

We have gotten our first look at Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms in a trailer released Thursday morning.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge released in April 2020 and was widely embraced as an excellent adaptation of the Mortal Kombat mythos. The film chronicled Lui Kang, Sonya Blade, and Johnny Cage‘s battles in the Mortal Kombat tournament on Shang Tsung‘s island, and, of course, Scorpion‘s quest for revenge against his nemesis Sub-Zero, who he had been led to believe killed his clan, the Shirai Ryu. The film ended with Earthrealm‘s victory over Outworld in the tournament, thus preventing the merging of the realms and Outworld conquest. However, Outworld emperor Shao Kahn is not taking this defeat lightly.

The trailer for Battle of the Realms teases another high stakes tournament, this time to be held in Outworld, very much similar to the events in the game series. Shao Kahn and Lui Kang face off in the trailer, and newcomers to the animated universe appear throughout, from classic characters like Kung Lao, the cyber ninja Cyrax, and Edenian assassin Jade, to niche fan favorites like the Kytinn D’Vorah and hardened warrior Reiko. Of course, it would not be Mortal Kombat without a Scorpion and Sub-Zero battle, as Kuai Liang, the second Sub-Zero, battles with his brother’s killer in the final moments of the trailer.

The official plot synopsis for the animated film is as follows:

In Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, our team of heroes is besieged by the enemy forces of Shao Kahn—forcing Raiden and his group of warriors into a deal to compete in a final Mortal Kombat that will determine the fate of the realms. Now our heroes must travel to Outworld in order to defend Earthrealm and, simultaneously, Scorpion must find the ancient Kamidogu before it’s used to resurrect the One Being – which would mean certain destruction of all things in the universe. Time is short and the stakes are high in this action-packed continuation of the Mortal Kombat journey.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms is set to release August 31 on Blu-Ray, 4k Ultra HD, and digital. The film features the voice talents of Joel McHale, Jennifer Carpenter, Jordan Rodrigues, and Patrick Seitz.
