[Potential Spoilers] Did Hasbro just reveal a major plot twist for Captain America: The Winter Soldier?
At Comic Con 2013 Hasbro revealed a first look at their upcoming Marvel Legends Toy line, and with it some new action figures with designs from both the Comic and Cinematic Universe, one such reveal has now been not only raising some questions, but causing many to wonder if a MAJOR plot point for Captain America: The Winter Soldier had been revealed.
***WARNING POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD****
During the Hasbro Marvel Panel at the San Diego Comic Con slideshow, the new Marvel Legends & movie action figure line’s alignment was revealed.
During the 2014 toy line Sneak Peek, Hasbro showed a Marvel Now “comic” Captain America, a “comic” Baron Zemo, then the next slide appeared with both a “movie” Red Skull and A.I.M. Soldier.
The Website Toyark.com was able to snag a photo of this slide,
Now while it could have been a simple typo, or a reference to a future “Animated Movie” and not Captain America: The Winter Soldier, if it is legitimately accurate and is in reference to the life action film line it could have some major consequences.
First off, lets address the lesser of the two, The A.I.M. Soldier.
Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe should instantly recognize that A.I.M. was a major plot point of Iron Man 3, with its head Aldrich Killian/The Mandarin being the major villain.
While its likely that A.I.M. could continue to cross over, and rumors are even stating that there will be MAJOR aim references in Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man film, its interesting to see that not does this figure imply that A.I.M had full on Soldiers now, but that they are garbed in the same design as their comicbook counterparts.
Now to the second, and bigger implication from these figures. The return of Red Skull. While his apparent demise at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger at the hands of the Cosmic Cube was accepted widely as he was transported out into the unknown it is possible that somewhere after his transport and during the 70+ years that Captain America was frozen he could have returned back to Earth.
While it is being speculated that his reveal could be actually possibly supporting the theory that Robert Redford’s character is the Red Skull in disguise. A closer look at the figure itself and what the Red Skull is wearing may yield even more startling developments.
What if the Red Skull is posing as Nick Fury? Its not outside the realm of possibilities that Red Skull could have returned sometime in that 70+ year gap of time, and we know from the first film that he is very capable at making realistic looking rubber faces.
Now I would be irritated if it turns out that Nick Fury was Red Skull the whole time, and I doubt that would even happen. But if this is true, it would be an interesting development and could even create a “lets go find where Red hid Nick” plot for future films.
But there are a few things to keep in mind, first off, this is Hasbro making this toy. Hasbro is notorious over the years for using the same sculpt for multiple toys, and just changing some minor details. However one could argue against the idea due to the fact that Hasbro has stated in the past that this new line would be featuring entirely new sculpts, but then again that could just be Hasbro trying to regain some credibility after so many mistakes on their part.
Admittedly this could just be a huge coincidence or a big mistake on Hasbro’s part, but either way, given that this figure was labeled as “Movie,” and that this Red Skull toy is a 6″ version while the Sam Jackson/Nick Fury one is only 3″ its leading many to assume its not a mistake and it was intentional. Either way, fans will know for sure in the coming months.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is set to hit April 4th 2014.
