Sorry Nerds – That Zelda TV Series Isn’t Happening

Last month, reports started circulating that Netflix was working with Nintendo to develop a television series based on the Legend of Zelda games. With its rich history and lore, a show centered around the Hylian universe has TONS of potential. Needless to say, everyone (including myself) was quick to jump on board. However, when asked by Time about the show’s development, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata made the following statement:

“As of now, I have nothing new to share with you in regard to the use of our IPs for any TV shows or films, but I can at least confirm that the article in question is not based on correct information,”

The article which initially reported the rumor was featured in the Wall Street Journal in February. While Iwata isn’t necessarily denying that a show could be in the works in the future, it sounds like our initial understanding was pretty off-base. Iwata confirmed last year that the company was seeking to more actively find new partners to work with, so I’m hoping this isn’t the end of our hopes for more Zelda content.
