[Review] Man Of Steel – Thumbs down

*** Note***Alright, first off, you should know my list. 1. Sandman 2. Batman 3. Deadpool 4. Superman 5. Tie between Green Lantern and Spider-man.

I’d like to think on a list of 1-10, my Superman knowledge is about a 6.5, so when the director takes on a superhero movie with the knowledge that’s like 5 or less, I get a little upset. Same applies when he actually has the knowledge but completely throws it out the window. Very rarely, can a director change the path of events making an alternate and new reality, while still showing  a fun action packed story that actually works, such instances would include J.J Abrams Star Trek. Directors are allowed a bit of leeway for creative changes and their own directive visions, but sometimes, that director can cross the line and rewrite the origin story and make weird sense of it, resulting in a big slap in the face to the fans. Keep in mind, in no way am I even close to a real movie critic, I just have opinions from time to time, and these, these are strong ones.

Prime example: X-men Origins: Wolverine. Ouch Gavin Hood, ouch.

Fortunately, Man of steel was no where near that bad. Was it good? uhm….

The film itself  was visually stunning, as can be expected from most Snyder movies, but in return, lost the story along the way. Most of the movie seemed way too rushed for me, the events unfurling left me wanting more and wondering why particular parts couldn’t be saved for even a sequel. Taking what could have been monumental moments in time and putting them into something where build up was very little and entirely too soon, just makes you wonder what the hurry is. If you want to blow someones mind, you need to set a good pace, have a plan, and make it seem like you know what your doing. The grand finale cannot happen too soon or all parties are left unsatisfied. Snyder achieved this, in making scenes that should have happened further down the road, melt away quickly, as though they never really mattered.

If you like the boy scout in blue, but don’t know much about him, there’s a chance you could enjoy this based on the first half of this very long film, and a small section of the second part. The fight scenes are the bee’s knees and the re-designed costumes are a breath of fresh air. Even the cast was exceptional. However-and heed my warning, if you are a huge Supe fan, and want to enjoy this movie, it’s best to forget everything you’ve learned and just take in this weird, semi familiar but crooked re-imagining of Zach Snyder’s Superman, because if you don’t you will have a bad time. I wanted so badly to love this movie, but was unfortunately, just left very disappointed and a tiny bit angry. Without handing out spoilers, I’ve created lists of what I liked, and didn’t like, because after all, the movie wasn’t all bad, just mostly bad.

  • Shirtless Henry Cavil
  • Jor-el (Alive)
  • Krypton
  •  Michael Shannon as Zod!!!! and his Kryptonian soldiers

Hated Disliked greatly:

  • The Story
  • The whole Superman Timeline being stomped and thrown in the trash

Hope this helped a bit. Oh, in no way am I saying don’t see this movie, just be prepared. You might actually like it. While I felt robbed and betrayed, this could be your summer blockbuster. You are either going to love it or hate it, there’s not much to be on the fence about. If you disliked it as I did, treat yourself to Ice cream and remember, sometimes people in this world do bad things to good people. You just have to remind yourself that there is good in this world, and someday, Superman will get the justice he deserves. I have supplied you with a list of Graphic novels starring my favorite Kryptonian. Happy reading!

  • Superman: Red Son
  • Kingdom Come
  • Superman: Peace on Earth
  • Lex Luthor: Man of Steel
  • The Death of Superman
  • Thy Kingdom Come
  • Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
  • Trinity
