[DEBUNKED] [RUMOR] Final Fantasy Versus XIII quietly cancelled and possibly becomes Final Fantasy XV

In a controversial twist move, Kotaku is reporting that they have heard from several sources that Square-Enix has let the highly anticipated Final Fantasy Versus XIII die and has quietly pulled the plug on its developement. Rumor suggests that they did this without a formal annoucement in an attempt to not see vicious backlash from fans and to avoid a massive stock drop by the move.

While its not new to suggest that Square-Enix has been lacking in the news department for this game, the game being announced over 6 years ago has received the smallest of updates every few months. The most recent of which this past March, where lead game designer and character director Tetsuya Nomura stated to the magazine Famitsu:

“We’re almost done with preparing the latest info for the game,”

“Because of a totally unrelated reason, there are circumstances in which that info cannot be released”

Then in May, Nomura told Game Informer Magazine:

“We would like to ask for your patience on an official announcement for this title. It always takes time when tackling the challenge of doing something completely new, but we are doing our best to bring information to the fans as quickly as we can. Your patience is greatly appreciated.”

In the article breaking the news/rumor by Kotaku, they stated that upon hearing the news they reached out to Square-Enix and sought out a statement, and what they got was:

“We have no information on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but will be sure to update you as it becomes available.”

Unfortunately this news doesn’t bode well for Square-Enix. Once upon a time, Square was at the top of their game. They controlled the RPG market, set the standard for how good a game should be, and how good it should look. But it would seem that in recent years, not only have they broken their own rules (they once stated that they would never make a sequel to their games, and they would always be stand alone.)

What is most unfortunate of all of this, is that this game was so highly anticipated. Some felt that it was Square-Enix’s last chance at redemption, I was looking forward to this game most of all, and this news is both frustrating and extremely upsetting.

However, there is one possible ray of light in this dark rain cloud. Rumor would suggest that just because “Final Fantasy Versus XIII” was cancelled, doesn’t mean that all the work they did, the story, its characters, etc, would go wasted. Rumor suggests (as well as a leaked video I witnessed several months ago) that production and all its contents have been folded into Final Fantasy XV which is possibly being announced later this year at the Final Fantasy event being held in Tokyo.

Although at first i took that rumor, and the video attached to it, as “yeah, this is bs, this whole video is polished footage from FF Versus XIII with the FFVX logo at the end.”, now it seems that the rumor itself may shed some hope on the subject. Now I actually do hope that the rumor was true.

[UPDATED] FINAL FANTASY VERSUS XIII IS NOT CANCELLED!
