[Update] Weekly Kickstarter: Exploding Kittens! “most-backed Kickstarter ever”
Update! Exploding Kittens has now become the most-backed Kickstarter project ever. With over 100,000 donations, the campaign has now raised more than $4 million. The creators are racing to add stretch goals, and have given the game an estimated arrival date of July 2015.
In the age where Cards Against Humanity has become more popular than Uno, we’re starting to see more off-the-wall card games by creators who aren’t too worried about offending their audiences.
Enter our weekly Kickstarter highlight: Exploding Kittens!
Gameplay is pretty straightforward; draw an exploding kitty, and you blow up, resulting in your death (and being removed from the game). Other cards in the deck allow you to diffuse the kitty-bombs, peek ahead at cards, or use other superpowers. The game began with a simple concept, but came full circle when Matthew Inman of The Oatmeal found out about the project and became involved with the art and development. Surprisingly, the base game is family-friendly and fairly tame in subject matter. If you want something a little grittier, the project offers NSFW pack (which is exclusive to the Kickstarter, btw). If we’ve learned anything from the Oatmeal, this expansion should be epic as hell.
If it’s any indicator as to the anticipation for this game, the project was 100% backed in 20 minutes, and raised $1 million within 8 hours. They’re going $2 million strong, and the project’s available for funding until February 19. I snagged a copy as soon as I heard about it, cuz lasers and cats!? Yes please.
I can’t begin to describe how excited I am for this game. The Oatmeal is one of my favorite webcomics, so the fact that Matthew Inman has a hand in it, has me very eager indeed.
