Shadowrun: Hong Kong Kickstarter launches, meets goal within hours.

ShadowrunHKAnn-610Good news, Nerds: The Kickstarter for the Shadowrun Returns and Shadowrun: Dragonfall sequel, Shadowrun: Hong Kong has gone live. Even better news, it met it’s goal of $100,000 in just the first few hours after posting.

Those who participated in the previous Kickstarter project or played the games that came out of it will have no trouble understanding why. These games deliver not only exciting tactical gameplay, but also interesting, fully realized characters and great writing in both plot and dialogue. They were also critically acclaimed, receiving high scores on Metacritic and making it to many “Game of the Year” lists. Additionally, the extra funding from the previous Kickstarter didn’t just go to line the pockets at the studios of game developer, Hairbrained Schemes. Instead, they used that money to release a director’s cut of Shadowrun: Dragonfall, which added new interfaces, story options, and 5 extra side missions. Did I mention this was given to backers for free?

Promising new gameplay elements and a fan requested setting, the team at Harebrained Schemes is also promising a new cast of distinct, memorable characters to run with, sharp writing and dialogue and lots of morally gray choices to stress over. Judging from their efforts in previous titles, I’m confident they’ll be able to deliver on these promises. For as little as $15, backers will receive a full, DRM-Free version of the game along with digital soundtracks from all Shadowrun titles. The game is estimated for release in August of 2015.

The Shadowrun setting has had 25 years of growth and development, and is being revitalized by a new generation of fans brought in by these games. The setting successfully combines elements of fantasy, cyberpunk, and sci-fi into a living, breathing world. This new game will take players to a magically awakened Hong Kong in the year 2056, where they’ll face off against literally soul crushing MegaCorporations, ruthless street gangs and triads, and supernatural threats from Chinese lore.
