Its been pretty much the biggest question on everyone’s minds at the end of Iron Man 3, Will Robert Downey Jr be returning as Iron Man?

While the ending credits to Iron Man did state that “Tony Stark Will Return,” the question was begged if that also meant RDJ.

After some somewhat troubling remarks from Marvel’s Kevin Feige that pretty much implied that Iron Man would continue even after RDJ stepped down:

“I believe there will be a fourth Iron Man film and a fifth and a sixth and a 10th and a 20th,” the producer says. “I see no reason why Tony Stark can’t be as evergreen as James Bond. Or Batman for that matter. Or Spider-Man. I think Iron Man is a character just like that.”

Marvel has now finally shed some light on the whole deal with an official press release:

“I am Iron Man.”

Tony Stark’s famous closing line to the very first Iron Man film takes on new life today as Marvel is pleased to announce the signing of Robert Downey, Jr. to reprise the role of the “billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist.”

Under the two-picture agreement, Downey will star as Tony Stark/Iron Man in “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” and “Marvel’s The Avengers 3.” Downey is represented at CAA by Bryan Lourd, Jim Toth and Matt Leaf and by his attorneys Tom Hansen and Stewart Brookman of the firm Hansen Jacobson.

Downey, Jr.’s last two Marvel films, 2012’s “Marvel’s The Avengers” and this year’s “Iron Man 3,” rank as two of the top five grossing films of all time, collectively earning over $2.7 billion worldwide to date.

“Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is being written and directed by Joss Whedon. Featuring favorites from the first Avengers film and new Marvel characters never before seen on the big screen, “Marvel’s The Avengers 2” is slated to begin production in March 2014 and open in theaters May 1, 2015.

So what about Iron Man 4? Rumors are coming forth that indicate that although he is contracted for the next two Avengers Film, its unlikely that he would continue outside of those films, leading many to speculate that its possible that Iron Man 4 wont even exist, and the 4th film we get with the titled character would not only be after Avengers 3 but would be the start of a new trilogy with a new leading Tony Stark.

Only time will tell on what happens, but either way, at least we get Robert Downey Jr for two more films.
