In a recent conversation with the guys over at the UK site, Hey You Guys, Man Of Steel scribe (as well as writer for Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy) revealed that Batman not only exists in the universe of the new Man Of Steel film (they even had a quick Easter Egg for Wayne Industries in the film) but its not the same Batman as we saw in the Dark Knight Trilogy:
“It would be disingenuous to say Warner Bros doesn’t hope that this would be the starting point for a shared universe. And Zack has said that Bruce Wayne exists in this universe. It would be a different Bruce Wayne from Chris’ [Nolan] Dark Knight trilogy, and it would be disingenuous to say that Zack and I haven’t had various conversations on set, around ‘what if’ and ‘moving forward’.
“That having been said, it’s all going to depend on the next few weeks. Warner Bros has hopes that there will be more Man Of Steel films, and that this will be the beginning of a shared universe. We could meet Batman, or Wonder Woman, or the Justice League in these movies. But they all hinge on box office reception.
“If that happens, I would be happy, and nervous, to dive in.”
Personally, here is my 2 cents on the idea. To me, Batman was always one of those characters that really doesn’t work in the uber-realistic tone that movies over the years have tried to display him as. As much as I enjoyed, and often loved, Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, the Batman that they portrayed was not the Batman that I read in the comics.
Batman to me has always been “he Worlds Greatest Detective, Master Martial Artist, and Pretty much one of the most dangerous Humans on the planet, and Nolan’s trilogy to me pushed the realism element a little too far and created a Batman that could basically be any man who was motivated enough.
If they want to Reboot Batman, do it in a way that doesn’t necessarily mean that we have to start from scratch. Introduce him as an entity that has been around for some time. Give us the Batman Arkham Asylum Video Game Batman, already established, and with all the supernatural rogues that fans have over the years come to love. Give us that and we will finally have the perfect Batman incarnation that film could ever see.
