[RUMOR] Has Amazing Spider-Man 2 found its villian and Mary Jane?
Variety is reporting that The Descendants actress Shailene Woodley is now in early negotiations to play Peter Parker’s most well known love interest Mary Jane Watson in Sony Pictures‘ upcoming follow-up to The Amazing Spider-Man.
This news comes highly surprising due to the recent announcement that that Marc Webb will be back in the director’s seat for The Amazing Spider-Man sequel, along with the majority of the first films cast reprising their roles. Sony Pictures is now preparing for the casting process for the new characters in the upcoming film, which will begin production early next year.
Rumors are also indicating that the studio is now actively searching for an actor to play Harry Osborn and the rumored villain Electro.
The rumor that Shailene Woodley is being sought out to play Mary Jane Watson is a big surprise for fans, who most were not even expecting the character to appear this early in the trilogy. The character of Mary Jane Watson is the most well known as the love interest of Peter Parker in the previous trilogy played by Kirsten Dunst in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy. Woodley is rumored to be the studio’s leading choice for this role.
While the rumor that the studio is seeking out an actor for the role of Harry Osborn seems to point to the rumors that
Norman Osborn may indeed be playing a significant role in future installments, and while many have been wondering and speculating who the character was in the first film’s post-credits scene, which featured Michael Massee in an unspecified role, rumors seem to point as his involvement in the film but not as Electro.
Although production doesn’t begin for a few more months, rumors like these could still come out in the woodwork and obviously there’s still plenty of time for Sony to decide which villain they want to actually take on Spider-Man in the upcoming sequel. This new film was written by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, Jeff Pinkner and James Vanderbilt.
The Amazing Spider-Man sequel is set to hit theaters May 2nd, 2014.
