James Gunn Confirms DCU Wonder Woman Movie Is Officially In Development

As the DCU begins to take shape, another key piece of its foundational trinity has just moved into place.

As the dawn of the DCU quickly approaches with James Gunn‘s Superman set to hit theaters in just a few weeks time, DC Studios is beginning to solidify the core lineup of heroes that will define this new cinematic era. With Superman hitting theaters, Supergirl in the post editing phase, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold having been already previously announced, co-chair James Gunn has now confirmed that a new Wonder Woman film is officially in active development, signaling the formation of DC’s iconic Trinity.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly promoting Superman, Gunn offered a brief but telling update regarding the status of Wonder Woman in the DCU:

Wonder Woman’s a separate thing, slow moving, but it’s moving, we’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman’s being written now.

As excitement builds for the future, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on the legacy that came before. Gal Gadot’s portrayal of Wonder Woman marked a turning point not only for the now defunct DCEU but for modern superhero cinema as a whole. First appearing in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Gadot quickly captivated audiences with her performance that quickly defined her Diana Prince across several films. Her standalone debut in Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, became a cultural milestone and one of the DCEU’s most celebrated successes, proving that a female-led superhero film could be both critically acclaimed and commercially powerful.

This freshly announced Wonder Woman film will be distinct from Paradise Lost, the previously revealed HBO Max prequel series centered on Themyscira. While Paradise Lost is set to explore the political , mythology and origins of the Amazons long before Diana’s time, the upcoming feature film will (presumably) focus directly on Wonder Woman herself. The two projects will exist independently within the broader DCU, offering fans both a grounded origin tale and a forward-facing story that further shapes Themyscira’s lasting legacy in the DCU.

Gunn’s comments echo those of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who previously emphasized the importance of Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman as the “four pillars” of the DCU moving forward. Gunn acknowledged the accuracy of Zaslav’s comments and offered some insight into the current state of development for these cornerstone characters.

I think that’s accurate, actually. I think that he got that from something I said. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we’re dealing with the other two.

While Gunn didn’t specify which characters fall into which category, it’s safe to assume he’s referring to Superman and Supergirl as the two most fully realized at this stage while The Brave and the Bold and the newly confirmed Wonder Woman film are still in earlier stages of development. As the DCU continues to take form, this renewed focus on bringing its most iconic heroes to the big screen signals a promising future ahead for DC fans. With Wonder Woman now officially reentering the spotlight, fans can look forward to a cinematic universe that honors legacy while building something bold and new.
