In a bout of divinely inspired casting, AMC’s adaptation of Garth Ennis’ cult classic comic Preacher has found their Cassidy. Joseph Gilgun (Misfits, This is England) will play Proinsias Cassidy, a vampire who’s over 100 years old and an integral part of Jesse Custer’s journey across America. Though the series has yet to cast it’s titular preacher, Gilgun will join Ruth Negga as Tulip and Ian Colletti as Eugene Root, aka Arseface.

Adapted by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg, Preacher is a series about Jesse Custer, a conflicted Texas Preacher in a small town who merges with a creature that has escaped from heaven, allowing him to speak with the word of God. Along with his assassin ex-girlfriend, Tulip and an Irish vampire named Cassidy, the three embark on a journey to literally find God and make him answer for abandoning Mankind.

For those not familiar with Preacher, Deadline describes Cassidy as “the most wild-ass, bestest “bro” you’d ever want to meet. He may be 100 years dead but no one’s more boisterously alive than Proinsias Cassidy. An incorrigible mischief-maker, Cassidy’s up for anything — joyriding, bungee-jumping, bank robbing, peyote dropping. He’s also a relentless conversationalist with opinions on everything from religion to politics to pop culture to theories on why people are better able to tolerate the odor of their own flatulence.”

My excitement for the series is only growing with these casting announcements, and I’m hoping that the actors playing Custer and The Saint of Killers is just as inspired. If done correctly, this series could easily be the next The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones.
