Last night it was revealed that Ben Affleck’s Batman would possibly be appearing in David Ayer’s upcoming Suicide Squad film, and thanks to that potential reveal we now know why. Rumors have started to fly that the next Batman solo-film will be based on none other than Frank Miller’s classic: The Dark Knight Returns.

Following the previous report that revealed the Batman cameo at the end of Suicide Squad, Forbes also revealed:

This would set up the Joker as a possible/likely antagonist in the solo Batman movie that’s planned in the next few years, and which I’ve heard will take some inspiration from Frank Miller’s comic book series The Dark Knight Returns — the third issue of which is a story about Batman facing off against an escaped Joker. I’m also told that Gotham City Police Commissioner Ellen Yindel (who replaces James Gordon during the comic book story) is planned for inclusion in the film.

This however raises some serious questions for longtime fans. WARNING – Potential Spoilers ahead: It is widely known that in the comic, The Dark Knight Returns, that following the final confrontation between The Joker and Batman, Batman finally kills the Joker with his bare hands. Having a film based so heavily on that comic is making many fans wonder if the casting of Jared Leto is something that we may only see for a couple of films, with the infamous character finally dying at the hands of the Dark Knight himself.

The above report also seemingly brings validity to the rumor that Commissioner Gordon is deceased by Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice.

While personally as much as I love The Dark Knight Returns, I really don’t think we need that film right now. Sure, DC/WB should take some elements from it, but I would rather have something like The Court Of Owls or Batman: Hush be adapted first instead of something as brutal as TDKR. But right now this is still a rumor and should be taken with a grain of salt. Only time will tell if this report is valid or not.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is currently set for  March 25, 2016 release date.
