Yesterday ended up being quite the day for DC Studios’ head James Gunn as he paid a visit to Ne York Comic – Con and gave fans some exciting reveals regarding Creature Commandos, Superman, and more!

Yesterday was a busy day for DC fans as DC Studios hosted a panel at New York Comic Con, offering an exciting glimpse into the future of the DCU. As the dawn of the DCU quickly approaches, the panel, led by James Gunn, delivered plenty of noteworthy moments, from the debut of the Creature Commandos‘ trailer to some long-awaited updates on next year’s Superman, Supergirl, and Lanterns.

Creature Commandos’ Trailer

To kick off the panel, James Gunn was joined by various members of the voice cast for the upcoming MAX animated series, Creature Commandos, and revealed an extended look at the first DCU set property. The trailer begins by revealing that Amanda Waller (played by none other than Viola Davis), no longer sanctioned to assemble human prisoners for her infamous Task Force X, rounds up these creatures to form a new team overseen by Rick Flag Sr (payed/voiced by Frank Grillo). As the trailer progress, we’re introduced to each member of the monstrous team and even get a first look at Wonder Woman villain Circe, who appears to be the overarching villain of Creature Commandos. In a blink and you miss it moment, the trailer also features the presence of Batman villain Clayface.

Creature Commandos is set to stream on MAX on December 5th. Starring Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbour as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis returning as Amanda Waller.

Superman

Shortly after the Commandos panel, Gunn began to provide updates on a number of DC Studios project including the true beginning of his vision, Superman. He started by praising new Superman actor, David Corenswet:

He is going to blow people the f*** away. He’s the best physical action star I’ve probably ever worked with. Rachel Brosnahan, people are going to die for her as well.

Gunn then went on to tease when the first trailer for Superman may be released:

There’s no trailer yet…it won’t be too long, but it won’t be too soon.

Supergirl

Gunn also shared news on Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, teasing:

We start shooting in England in January. I just saw the screen test with Milly Alcock. It’s based on Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow. Ana (Nogueria) came and pitched the story, and it was just one of the best pitches I’ve ever heard. She immediately wrote a first draft that was great, and it just got better and better.

Gunn also added that he recently watched Alcock’s screen tests with actresses trying out for Ruthye.

Lanterns

As for MAX’s Lanterns, Gunn revealed that he nearly casted Aaron Pierre, who was recently casted as John Stewart, as Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s. When speaking of Pierre and Kyle Chandler, who was also recently casted as Hal Jordan, Gunn went on to say:

They are so good together as Hal and John that you will be hooked on the two of them the moment they hit the screen.

DCU’s Canon & Continuity

Gunn also addressed the DCU’s continuity and whether certain strands of the now defunct DCEU will factor into the DCU’s new world:

Every project of DC Studios will be its own thing. Everything is going tremendously well. Superman, Supergirl, Lanterns. They are a part of this cinematic universe, but every one of those things will be very different aesthetically. We learn that other things that have happened in the past in other media have still happened. There are references to things that happened in the past. And those references then become canon in the DCU because we mention them.

As the dawn of the DCU continues to near, the future looks brighter than ever for fans eager to see these iconic heroes hit the big and small screen.
