‘Superman: Legacy’ starts filming with a new title and logo reveal

It’s an exciting time to be a Superman fan. Not only do we get a sneak peek at Superman’s new suit with the reveal of the chest emblem, but we also have a new title for the film. Superman: Legacy will now simply be titled Superman.

On the day that filming started, which coincidentally was also the birthday of Clark Kent, James Gunn revealed the logo for the next Superman movie. Gunn has said that the suit was inspired by Alex Ross; the logo, in particular, is very close to the look of Superman’s symbol in the Kingdom Come comic.

A similar version of the symbol was seen in the CW’s Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths, then donned by former Superman Brandon Routh. That one had a black background, but there was also a similar logo in the recent animated series My Adventures with Superman, which also had a yellow background.

Gunn also went on to explain his reasoning for the title change in more detail.

It felt like the right name. And when I brought it up everyone agreed. And there really hasn’t been a movie titled “SUPERMAN” since the 1979 movie was solely promoted as “Superman: The Movie“.

Gunn’s move to change the title to Superman makes sense; it shows that this is a fresh start for the franchise and the DC Universe. It isn’t unprecedented, either. J.J. Abrams made a similar move when he released his Star Trek movie as simply Star Trek in 2009 since the first Star Trek movie from 1979 had been titled Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Superman will be released in theaters on July 11th, 2025, and stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and Nathan Fillion.
