93rd Annual Oscars: Full List Of Winners
The 2020-2021 Academy Awards ceremony took place last night and there was no lack of surprises. History was made in more ways than one. The show was held live from the Union Station Los Angeles, the Dolby Theater at the Hollywood & Highland Center, and across the world in broadcast stations set up by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Many nominees tuned in from their respective stations in the U.K., Italy, Australia, among other places.
After the COVID-19 pandemic affected the filmmaking industry, the Oscars decided to reschedule their ceremony from the traditional late-February/early-March date to April 25, 2021, in order to accommodate for late contenders. The nominees were also announced later than usual. They also became more lenient towards the theatrical release requirements for films. This ceremony was already peculiar for its set up, but then it was decided for the Best Actor in a Leading Role award to close the night with winner Anthony Hopkins not being part of the event. The top prize of the night, Best Picture, which went to the frontrunner, Nomadland, was the third to last award given (behind Best Actress and Best Actor).
Nomadland was the big winner of the night by taking the top prizes, including Best Picture. Frances McDormand won the Best Actress in a Leading Role award bringing her Oscar count up to three. Director Chloe Zhao‘s victory in the Best Director category marks only the second time a female director is honored with the award. In the Best Actor category, Chadwick Boseman was the favorite to win the award for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, but Anthony Hopkins was voted the victor for his incredible performance in Florian Zeller’s The Father, which also picked up the award for the Best Adapted Screenplay. Hopkins also became the oldest actor ever to win that respective Oscar at the age of 83.
The favorites in the Supporting Actor categories were the eventual winners. Daniel Kaluuya won Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Judas and the Black Messiah, while Yuh-Jung Youn became the first ever Korean actor or actress to win an Oscar with her victory in the Best Actress in a Supporting Role category for Minari.
This year’s ceremony was tightly contested, more so than in previous years. Even though Nomadland won the most awards (3), several films were close. The list of films with two Oscar victories last night include David Fincher’s Mank (Best Production Design and Best Cinematography), Amazon’s Sound of Metal (Best Sound and Best Film Editing), Pixar’s Soul (Best Animated Feature Film and Best Original Score), The Father (Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay), Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling), and Judas and the Black Messiah (Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Song).
It should also be recognized that Thomas Vinterberg’s Another Round, starring Mads Mikkelsen won the Best International Feature Film award for Denmark. A film several believed should had also contested for Best Picture.
