Storyboard for “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” Reveals Mothra Twins Scene

The director of 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Michael Dougherty, has revealed a storyboard for the aforementioned film showcasing a post credits scene with the Mothra Twins. The Mothra Twins, also known as the Shobijin or the Cosmos, first appeared in the 1961 film Mothra. The minuscule priestesses act as Mothra‘s link to the human world, usually through the use of telepathic powers.

In the storyboard, it appears that the Mothra Twins were supposed to show up in a second post-credits scene, following the scene of eco-terrorist Alan Jonah (Charles Dance) recovering one of the severed heads of King Ghidorah. The scene involves Dr. Ilene Chen and Dr. Ling (both played by Zhang Ziyi) walking into an ancient Chinese temple, hosting both Dr. Chen’s twin daughters and a Mothra egg.

For the modernization of Godzilla and the lore behind both the King of the Monsters and his adversaries, director Michael Dougherty wanted to use the Chen sisters as a modern retelling of the Mothra Twins, using their ties to Titan-studying organization, Monarch, as a different take on the priestesses. Dougherty stated:

“It was important to me to find ways to modernize the ideas that [Mothra] has followers. Modernize the priestesses. There are still certain realms of believability to keep in take. You have to ease people into the more fantastical aspects.”

Dr. Chen’s twin daughters were then supposed to take over their mother and aunt’s roles as the Shobijin, furthering the legacy, like their grandmothers and great-grandmothers before them. While the scene may not have been filmed for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the discovery of a second Mothra egg can be seen briefly in a Monarch file during the credits, hinting the return of the giant moth to the big screen.
