Jason Momoa will play Lobo in DC Studios ‘Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow’

It’s official: Jason Momoa is trading in his trident for a space bike and cigar as he officially joins the DCU as Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

The dawn of James Gunn and Peter Safran‘s DCU is upon us (in theory), with the first DCU story, Creature Commandos, currently unfolding week by week. While we’ve had glimpses of what to expect from this new cinematic universe, fans will get their first fully fleshed-out look into this world next summer with Gunn’s Superman, starring David Corenswet as the titular character. With the first Superman trailer released last week, the initial craze has settled, and the spotlight has shifted to news about other upcoming DCU projects confirmed to be in development. One such project, announced by Gunn nearly two years ago during his DC StudiosChapter One: Gods and Monsters slate reveal, is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is steadily progressing as production gears up for early next year.

In the time that has passed since the initial announcement, Ana Nogueira was announced as the writer for the film, Milly Alcock has been cast as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, along with Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills. Now, major news has surfaced that the DCEU‘s Aquaman, Jason Momoa, has been cast as the infamous intergalactic bounty hunter, Lobo, in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

As previously mentioned, this would not be Momoa’s first turn within the realm of DC. Almost a year ago, Momoa’s Aquaman: The Last Kingdom officially (or unofficially?) closed the door on the DCEU’s story that was told over a decade ago. Despite his role as the DCEU’s Arthur Curry / Aquaman, Momoa has long expressed his desire to play Lobo for years, frequently mentioning it during interviews, including while promoting The Lost Kingdom. Momoa broke the casting news himself when he shared a quote on his personal Instagram account when he said he hoped DC would reach out to him about the role one day.

A fan-favorite DC character, Lobo is a ruthless, intergalactic bounty hunter and anti-hero known for his brutal methods, humor, and love of chaos. In recent years, he has appeared in mediums such as Krypto, Young Justice, and the animated Man of Tomorrow film.

While Momoa undoubtedly gave an exciting turn modernizing Aquaman after years of the characters languishing, the idea of him trotting around as the cigar-chomping Lobo is undeniably thrilling (and perfect). Another intriguing aspect of this casting is its potential ripple effects within the DCU. When Gunn and Safran took over the reins and formed DC Studios, they emphasized the possibility of retaining actors from the previous DCEU, albeit in new roles. Momoa now becomes the first to make that transition, signaling an exciting precedent for the franchise’s future.
