‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel ‘House of the Dragon’ Ordered Straight-to-Series

Yesterday was rather tumultuous for Game of Thrones fans hoping to return to Westeros. Shortly after news broke that HBO had decided to pass on the Naomi Watts-led Game of Thrones prequel project, the premium cable network announced a straight-to-series order for a different prequel set in Westeros called House of the Dragon.

Based on George R. R. Martin’s companion novel of the same name, the series will track the beginnings and rise of the Targaryen family, taking place 300-years prior to the events of the original series. Martin alongside Ryan Condal (Colony), will pen the 10-episode project. In addition Condal will serve as co-series showrunner with director Miguel Sapochnik, best known for the Emmy-winning Game of Thrones episode, “Battle of the Bastards.” Sapochnik will also direct the House of the Dragon pilot.

Announced at the end of Warner Media’s HBO Max presentation on October 29, House of the Dragon joins an exciting HBO Max original lineup, including two new shows based on the DC Comics properties Green Lantern and Strange Adventures, as well as projects by JJ Abrams, Ridley Scott, Elizabeth Banks, and Mindy Kaling.

HBO Max will release in May 2020 and will be $14.99 per month.
