Apple Announces Season 2 of ‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ and New Monsterverse Spin-Offs

With Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire currently gracing the big screens all over the world with more kaiju mayhem, fans have begun speculating what the future of the Monsterverse will entail. Similar questions arose shortly after Godzilla v. Kong was released, only for AppleTV+ to announce that they struck a deal with Legendary and Toho Company Ltd. for a live-action series set in the MonsterVerse titled Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.

Now, history seems to be repeating itself, as Apple TV+ has not only renewed Monarch for a second season but has also struck another deal with Legendary that will develop multiple spinoff series based on the lore of the MonsterVerse.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ has left an indelible imprint on the hearts, minds and imaginations of audiences around the world, led by the brilliance of Chris, Matt, Kurt, Wyatt and the incredibly gifted talented cast and creative team. We couldn’t be more excited for viewers to not only have the chance to experience even more thrills in season two, but to embark on epic, new journeys in the franchise, as we expand Legendary’s Monsterverse.

Morgan Wandell, Head of International Development for Apple TV+ via Variety.

The first season of Monarch took place in the immediate aftermath of the first Monsterverse movie, 2014’s Godzilla. It followed two step-siblings as they go searching for answers following their father’s apparent death. Their journey eventually leads them to Lee Shaw (played by the father-sun duo of Wyatt & Kurt Russell), a longtime member of Monarch, the mysterious government agency tasked with keeping an eye on Titans like Godzilla.

The series was largely considered a successful entry into the Monsterverse amongst fans and critics alike. Whether the series picks up where it left off in the Season 1 finale remains to be seen, especially with – spoiler alert! – all of the main characters from Monarch encountering none other than Kong himself on Skull Island. Given that the characters return from Hollow Earth moved the series’ story into 2017, it seems that a new period in the Monsterverse timeline for season 2 is ready to be explored (shortly before the events of 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters).

While it is currently unknown what the other spinoff shows will focus on, focusing on other Titan’s stories within humanity’s existence (such as Skar King, Mothra, or Ghidorah) could be an interesting way to further enrich the lore of the Monsterverse. Nonetheless, it appear that the Monsterverse is ready to forge on in a big and exciting way.
