Marvel Pushes Movie Releases Back For New Spider-Man Movie

Tonight has been a busy night for Marvel Studios, Disney, and Sony Pictures. The collective media giants have just now struck a deal that will allow Spider-Man his very own place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Finally! Read more about the deal here.

As part of the announcement, Disney confirmed they will be releasing a stand-alone Spider-Man movie, after introducing him in a separate MCU movie, presumably Captain America: Civil War. Following his introduction, this new Spider-Man movie will be released on July 28, 2017.

But wait. Wasn’t the third Thor movie, Thor: Ragnarok, intended for July 28, 2017? Well, it was, but now Thor 3 will be pushed back to make room for Spider-Man, back to the November 3, 2017 slot originally set aside for the Black Panther movie.

Of course now we can spot the pattern, as Black Panther pushes Captain Marvel out of her July 6, 2018 release date, and Captain Marvel takes over for Inhumans on November 2, 2018. Inhumans gets a brand new slot of July 12, 2019, which unfortunately means we may have to wait four years now to hear Black Bolt’s whispers demolish cities.

Since that’s a lot of dates, here’s a recap for the new movie releases:

  • May 6, 2016: Captain America 3: Civil War
  • Nov 4, 2016: Doctor Strange
  • May 5, 2017: Guardians of the Galaxy 2
  • July 28, 2017 : Thor: Ragnarok Newly Announced Spider-Man title
  • Nov 3, 2017: Black Panther Thor: Ragnarok
  • May 4, 2018: Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1
  • July 6, 2018: Captain Marvel Black Panther
  • Nov 2, 2018: Inhumans Captain Marvel
  • May 3, 2019: Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2
  • July 12, 2019: Inhumans

This schedule change means a few things. First of all, Inhumans may turn out to be the first official movie of MCU Phase Four. Second, since Spider-Man will appear in an MCU-related film prior to his stand-alone movie, it’s entirely possible that he will make an appearance in Captain America: Civil War, as many have been speculating. This would be a big deal for Civil War, if accurate, as Spider-Man played a very important role in the story line.

Our esteemed leader and Editor-in-Chief here at The Cultured Nerd also announced via an unnamed source on his twitter feed that there will reportedly be a large ‘hero montage’ near the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron, and, combining this fact with more information about the ‘Spidey-Summit’, it looks possible that Spider-Man will be shown in said montage:

It remains to be seen if Marvel is going to throw a third Spider-Man origin movie at us, or if they’re going to continue off of already-established character mythos and use the movie to bring him into a rich story with character cameos from other characters in the MCU. Prior rumors, and confirmation from our Editor Taylor, have revealed that Marvel is planning to simply introduce Spider-Man as an already established College Student, forgoing the Origin story and getting right down to the hero work.

Hopefully, we’ll see an original movie that doesn’t rehash his origin again, but uses the character to build upon an already-expansive interconnected story line.
