Variety reports that Marvel’s recently announced Spider-Man reboot is already on the lookout for the next person to don the red and blue tights. With Andrew Garfield leaving the suit still warm, the two names currently circulating are Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner, Teen Wolf) and Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson, Fury). However, neither of these actors have been formally approached for the role, so the possibility of Marvel giving us a Miles Morales Spider-Man movie is still in play.
According to Variety, this new iteration of the web-head will stay in high school, which clashes with some other rumors that we’ve heard here at The Cultured Nerd. If it’s true, it would likely push Donald Glover out of the running to play the character if he’s still interested in the role (oh, please let him be interested!). Casting a younger actor would give the MCU something it doesn’t currently have: a character that young kids can easily relate to.
Kids are able to relate to Spider-Man much easier than billionaire Iron Man or WWII vet Captain America because he struggles with many of the same things they do. He still deals with the teen angst and social awkwardness we’ve all experienced, though he had a much better excuse for it than we did. By keeping the wall crawler confined to high school, Marvel would be in keeping with what has made Spider-Man so popular for decades.
Of course, it’s also perfectly possible they want to sign a young actor so they can keep him around for a 12 picture deal. We’ll keep you posted as more of this develops.
