Minecraft Coming to PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One This August

Fellow builders rejoice! Thanks to an Article from Mojang coming this August, Minecraft will be hitting the new gen consoles. The Minecraft community (myself included) is getting the ever changing world of Minecraft on their new systems.

For those of us that have Minecraft on Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, we will have different upgrading options based on which system we have the game purchased on.

“Minecraft: Playstation 3 + Vita Edition will cost $19.99, and support cross-buy, so those who’ve purchased the PS3 through the PlayStation Network will be able to download the PS Vita version for free. Mojang is working with Sony “to enable upgrade from the Blu-ray disc version of Minecraft: Playstation 3 Edition.”

Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition will also retail for $19.99 and include “significantly” bigger worlds, and greater draw distance than its PS3 and PS Vita counterparts. Those who’ve purchased Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition through PSN will be able to upgrade for $4.99. As with Minecraft: Playstation 3 + Vita Edition, Mojang is working with Sony to device an upgrade solution for owners of the retail disc. Those with Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition will be able to import their worlds into the PS4 version, but not their saves.

Unfortunately, our saves will not be available for cross platform play and will not be imported to the new systems.

“There are technical reasons for this,” he wrote, “we can make worlds bigger without too much stress, but shrinking them causes all kinds of problems.” Cross-platform play between PS4 and the PS3 and PS Vita Editions will not be supported. “Many, but not all” of the skins and texture packs will be available on PS4 because “some of the items are trapped in licensing deals.”

Similar to the Playstation release, Minecraft: Xbox One Edition will cost $19.99 or $4.99 as an upgrade for those who purchased the Xbox 360 version though Xbox Live Arcade or have played online with the retail disc. The same limitations for cross platform play effect the Xbox Edition as well.

In regards to any DLC customers may have purchased for their Minecraft worlds:

“Many, but not all” of the skins and texture packs will be available on PS4 because “some of the items are trapped in licensing deals.”

If you haven’t played Minecraft before or are interested in seeing what it’s like, please feel free to join The Cultured Nerd for an all new Let’s Play!  Nathan Sturgis and I have already laid the ground work for our very own Editor and Chief, Taylor Murphy, Co-Editor Neil Fastabend, and Music Extraordinaire/Contributor Patrick O’Brien to begin their journey into Minecraft. Taylor and Patrick have never played Minecraft before, so naturally, Nathan and I have built a gauntlet for them to venture, endure, and ultimately die in. A lot. More info will be available soon!

For those that haven’t purchased the popular “build it yourself” game that has captivated the community so tightly, you will be able to purchase the newest edition for the new gen systems for $19.99 this August.
