It’s official: Shailene Woodley cast as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. (+ trilogy storyline info)

Not to long ago we shared the news that Shailene Woodley was being sought to play the role of Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming sequel to Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man franchise. Marc Webb which is currently just being referred to as The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Now, Woodley has offically now been confirmed to play Mary Jane Watson.

So how will this all work? According to rumors, Woodley’s part in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will actually be a small one in comparison to the role of Gwen Stacy, which mainly is to set up a much larger role for the 3rd installment of the trilogy.

Hollywood Reporter  broke the news and with it, revealed some huge news about the future of the films.

Woodley initially had scheduling issues as an obstacle to the deal making, having had offers to play both Mary Jane and the Divergent lead. But the Mary Jane role is proving to be only a very small part in Amazing Spider-Man 2 but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie as the studio seeks to build to the classic “Death of Gwen Stacy” story.

While fans did see this coming, but it is interesting to note that its implying that we will once again see The Green Goblin, and more or less could imply it would be in similar fashion to his first film appearance, but this time, Spider-Man doesn’t save the girl in time.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to hit theaters May 2nd, 2014.
