Are we finally getting a third Boondock Saints?
It looks like the MacManus brothers are back as John Wick producers Thunder Road step in to take the sequel’s reins.
Boondock Saints fans have to be the most patient fans in the world; if not, they have to be the most heartbroken with the third film in the potential trilogy getting announced, then scraped, then announced again, then scrapped. Could it really be it this time though? It just might be, and if so, then what good hands to carry our hopes in. Thunder Road Films has joined up with rights holder Dragonfly Films to take on the challenge of bringing the franchise back to the big screen.
The Boondock Saints, the original 1999 film about two young Irish vigilante brothers from Boston, became a cult hit and spawned a sequel, The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day, in 2009. At the end of that sequel, it certainly seemed like it was set up for another film, but attempts to get a third film off the ground floundered over the years. Now, according to Deadline, Thunder Road Films is on the search for a new director as original director Troy Duffy steps aside to continue his story in a series of books instead.
It is as yet unknown what the plot of the third film will be about, but it sounds like it will be an expansion of the MacManus world. Here’s what Thunder Road Films’ producer Basil Iwanyk had to say:
When we were given the opportunity to help bring the MacManus brothers back to the screen, we jumped at the chance. The unique possibility of building on the iconic mythology and characters for all the long-time fans of the series, as well as opening it up to a whole new generation, is one that we couldn’t be more excited about.
The new film reunites The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus with The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles star Sean Patrick Flanery as the two fraternal twin Irish American brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus. Reedus and Flanery will also be executive producers on the film.
I’m thrilled to be working alongside Basil Iwanyk’s Thunder Road Films and Todd Myers’ Dragonfly Films to bring more of the story of the Boondock Saints to audiences. I can’t wait for everyone to see what we have long been working toward. We are pressing on without our longtime friend and Captain, Troy Duffy on this one. He has decided to write a Boondock Saints book series and I can’t wait to read it. –

Basil and Todd are the perfect partners to bust the brothers out of prison. With Basil and Todd at the helm, this will be the best Saints yet. So now it’s time for the brothers to break out the pea coats, re-load, and get back to work.
