First look at Kristen Ritter in AKA Jessica Jones
The first images of Kristen Ritter as the titular character of AKA Jessica Jones have landed, though don’t expect to see tights or super-heroics just yet. These look to be some basic test or promo shots for the series. Filming for the series has recently begun and with the teaser for Daredevil now on the web, it’s time for Netflix to begin building hype for their other projects.
Based on the graphic novel Alias by Brian Michael Bendis, the series follows private investigator Jessica Jones after a short-lived career as superhero Jewel. Working to overcome a tragedy in her past related to David Tennant’s Zebediah Killgrave, AKA the Purple Man, Jones takes on cases related to the super-powered individuals popping up all over the world. The original comic was published under Marvel’s MAX imprint, meaning it contained more violence, sexual content, and darker themes than their other books.
The show is building quite a cast of additional actors and heroes, with Mike Coulter (Zero Dark Thirty, Halo: Nightfall) as Luke Cage and Rachel Taylor (The Loft, Darkest Hour) as Patricia Walker, AKA Hell Cat. With the addition of Carrie Ann Moss (The Matrix) as the currently unknown Harper, it’s obvious Netflix is bringing in lots of star power for this one. And for good reason, as this series will likely be much darker than Marvel’s other outings. Kristen Ritter is no stranger to a gritty drama, and after her performance as Jesse Pinkman’s girlfriend in AMC’s Breaking Bad, I’m excited to see what she brings to this series.
Marvel is great at giving us something different with each entry into their cinematic universe. Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a great spy thriller and Guardians of the Galaxy was an over the top space opera. With AKA Jessica Jones, it sounds like we’re going to be getting a noir detective story set in a world with superheroes.
