Karen Gillan Wants To Play SPIDER-GIRL On Film
Actress Karen Gillan, probably best known for her role as a companion on Doctor Who, is playing the villain Nebula in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. But what if she played a hero? Who would she be interested in playing? In a recent interview with SFX, Karen Gillan was asked that very question.
SFX – “If you could play a superhero, which one would you choose?”
Gillan – “Yeah, who is there…? I want to play a version of Spider-Man that’s a lady.”SFX – “Spider-Woman?”
Gillan – “Spider-Woman – does she exist?”SFX – “There’s a Spider-Woman and a Spider-Girl.”
Gillan – “I want to play Spider-Girl!”
It’s quite apparent that Gillan had no idea that the Spider-Girl, AKA May “Mayday” Parker, was actually real. She seemingly just wants to play the character because she likes the male version.
While Sony has big plans for the Spider-Man films, it’s unlikely that they would use Spider-Girl, as her series was created as a spin-off of a one-shot “What If?” comic, and is by no means normal canon. More likely, Marvel will introduce Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) in an upcoming Avengers project, or possibly in one of the Netflix-released TV series like Luke Cage. Or, red-headed Julia Carpenter could appear as either Spider-Woman, Arachne, or Madam Web in an upcoming Spider-Man film, who Gillan would be well-suited to play.
