Thunderbolts* Director is being courted by Marvel Studios for the MCU X-Men film

Deadline is reporting that Marvel Studios has initiated preliminary discussions with director Jake Schreier to direct the upcoming X-Men reboot which will be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Schreier gained recognition for  his work on Thunderbolts* (now revealed to be The New Avengers) because he successfully managed ensemble casts  and intricate character relationships.

Thunderbolts made its theatrical debut on May  2, 2025 by introducing Yelena Belova and Bucky Barnes and U.S.  Agent as part of its antihero team. The movie revealed the team’s transformation into the “New  Avengers” through the asterisk symbol in its title.

The  X-Men project will be written by screenwriter Michael Lesslie who has previously worked on The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and Assassin’s Creed. The production of the film  is expected to be handled by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.

The upcoming  film will bring new mutants into the story while incorporating them into the larger MCU universe. The introduction of  mutants through Marvel Studios follows their current approach of presenting mutants through small hints and brief appearances in different  projects.

The X-Men reboot’s potential direction by Schreier demonstrates Marvel Studios’ trust in his storytelling approach after Thunderbolts* received positive reception. The X-Men universe remains a  topic of interest for MCU fans who wait for official updates about its future integration into the franchise.
