Batman’s origin story gets a new twist
For fans of the beloved Caped Crusader, you’re probably familiar with his origin story. The Wayne family – Thomas, Martha, and a young Bruce – are leaving the theater. As they’re heading home they are faced with a mugger who ends up shooting both Thomas and Martha. Bruce watches his parents be mercilessly slaughtered in front of him as a child, and from there grows the tormented heart of one of the most popular superheroes ever. The murderer is named Joe Chill. And now, years later, Batman‘s origin story is getting a new twist.

In Detective Comics #1090, some new backstory is given to Joe Chill. Readers come to learn that at one point in time Chill was in the hospital on the verge of death. Though believed that he wouldn’t make it, Dr. Thomas Wayne chose to attempt to save his life anyways. And it worked! That’s right: Thomas Wayne – in an effort to be the doctor that he knew he could be – saved the life of the man who would end up killing him and his wife later on. To take it a step further, Thomas was the one that allowed him to get discharged from the hospital. Little did he know what his act of saving Chill’s life would do to the lives of those in his own family.
For Batman fans everywhere, this is sure to rock their world for a moment. Only future comics will tell how this goes on to effect Batman and his story!
