‘Godzilla Minus One’ streaming debut announced in Japan
Rejoice! Godzilla Minus One is finally coming to streaming. To Amazon Prime in Japan, that is. The movie will land on the streaming service on May 3rd, which means a US release shouldn’t be too far away.
According to comicbook.com, the film will be available for streaming in color and black and white. Both versions are currently still in cinemas in Japan but will likely be making room on April 26th for the Japanese release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
The film, which has been in Japanese theaters for over 5 months, has received critical acclaim around the world from fans and critics alike, hailing it as one of the best Godzilla movies in years and finding itself at the top of many people’s lists for the best movies of 2023. Last month, it did its country proud, taking home the Oscar for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards.
Director, writer, and visual effects supervisor for the film Takashi Yamazaki has also received praise from the likes of Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, and Godzilla X Kong director Adam Wingard.
Unfortunately, Godzilla Minus One cannot currently be seen in US theaters, reportedly due to a contractual agreement between Toho and Legendary Studios that doesn’t allow two Godzilla movies to be released during the same year. Here’s hoping it won’t be too long until it arrives on streaming services in the US.
