Dive Back into Atlantis: First Trailer for “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” Released

The much-anticipated trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has finally surfaced, and it looks to promise an epic underwater odyssey. Directed by James Wan and featuring the return of Jason Momoa as Aquaman, this sequel dives into darker waters as Arthur Curry faces off against a vengeful Black Manta, portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who is now armed with the mythical Black Trident and back and angling for vengeance.

With Atlantis and the world at risk, Arthur must forge an uneasy alliance with his imprisoned half-brother, Orm, played by Patrick Wilson, as they set out to protect Atlantis and save their world from irreversible destruction. Amber Heard also reprises her role as Mera, now Atlantis’ queen and a new mother. The trailer teases multi-layered dynamics, with family matters and raising a child complicating the couple’s royal duties.

As to where this film fits within the broader context of the DCEU, this sequel has big fins to fill. The first Aquaman film was among the highest-grossing DC films ever, earning over one billion dollars at the box office.

With James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm of DC Studios, there’s talk of a DCEU reboot beginning with Superman: Legacy. However, don’t rule out Aquaman’s story continuing as a standalone saga in the DC Multiverse, especially if this sequel proves to be another box-office catch.

But make no mistake, the stakes are high. If the sequel fails to make a splash, it could signal the end of the current DCEU era as we know it. That said, Jason Momoa’s presence in the DC films might not be over even if the sequel doesn’t meet expectations; rumors are already circulating about him potentially returning as the space-faring bounty hunter Lobo, so whether it’s as Aquaman or Lobo, Momoa’s days in the DC universe may still be far from high tide.

What do you think of the trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom? Would you rather see Jason Mamoa continue as Aquaman or switch to Lobo in DC films? Or maybe both? Let us know in the comments below!
