Last night, the 27th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place, and it gave us several surprises heading into this year’s Academy Awards. The SAG awards have always been significant when it comes to the awards season race that culminates with the Oscars. Even with the COVID-19 pandemic, it is still an interesting awards season with many great films leading. Sunday night’s ceremony, which was pre-taped via Zoom, was historic in more ways than one.

The winners were chosen by the approximate 160,000-person membership of actors in the guild. The votes were cast and Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 was the big winner of the night by earning the SAG Award for Best Ensemble, the guild’s top honor that’s equivalent to a best picture prize. This recognition usually favors the winning film as last year’s winner, Parasite, went on to conquer the Oscars’ Best Picture category. The win was also a huge accomplishment for Netflix as it earned its first-ever victory in the Best Ensemble category. The streaming service also had two other films nominated: Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods and George C. Wolfe’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Speaking of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, this film was crucial for the most historic feat of the night, the individual acting categories. The production’s stars Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis both won the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role and Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, respectively. Boseman’s incredible performance earned him the posthumous award which was accepted by his wife, Simone Ledward Boseman. Davis, on the other hand, tied Renee Zellweger with the most individual SAG wins at three.

Daniel Kaluuya, just like in the Golden Globes, dominated the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role category for his performance in Judas and the Black Messiah, once again topping other actors like Sacha Baron Cohen, Jared Leto, and Leslie Odom Jr. For the category of Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role, we had the first ever Korean actress victory with Minari‘s Youn Yuh-jung. She is also the first Korean actress to be in contention for the Best Actress in a Supporting Role at this year’s Oscars.

History took place as this was the most diverse set of SAG winners in any of the previous ceremonies. Deserved victories which propel the actors to be frontrunners for the Academy Awards. Also, this year’s best cast film category was made up of the most racially inclusive movies in the guild’s history as Da 5 Bloods, Minari, One Night in Miami and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom had culturally diverse set of actors as their stars. Must be noted that current favorite for the Best Picture award, Nomadland, had a quiet night and was not even considered for the ensemble category. Michael Keaton also made history with The Trial of the Chicago 7‘s victory as he set the record of being the first person to win three SAG awards for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, following his awards as part of the winning ensemble in 2014’s Birdman and 2015’s Spotlight.

In the TV side of things, The Crown and Schitt’s Creek dominated the night with victories in the series ensemble and actress sections for drama and comedy, respectively. Jason Bateman picked up the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series award for Ozark, and just like in the Golden Globes, Jason Sudeikis conquered the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series category for Apple TV+‘s original, Ted Lasso.

The stunt teams were also recognized as Wonder Woman 1984 and The Mandalorian were victorious for the stunt film and TV awards, respectively.
