“Star Wars” Star Daisy Ridley Says Rey is Unlikely to Return to the Franchise

Lucasfilm / Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy has been a point of contention for Star Wars fans, as the films never quite received the universal praise from their fanbase. Despite the mixed reception, there’s no denying the films introduced audiences to the talents of lesser known actors and actresses (at the time of casting), such as Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, and Adam Driver. It now seems that one of the core characters from the sequel trilogy has expressed little to no desire for a return anytime soon.

Daisy Ridley, who portrays the Jedi Rey throughout the trilogy, has stated that she doesn’t expect to return to the Star Wars franchise anytime soon. The actress made the statement while conducting an interview hosted by Josh Gad during an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! Towards the conclusion of the interview, Gad asked Ridley if she’d be open to returning to the galaxy far far away in a scenario where the studio requested her to come back in ten years time. Ridley’s answer is quick to point out that she felt Rey’s character arc was closed out definitively.

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s conclusion having Rey adopt the Skywalker name after burying Luke’s and Leia’s respective lightsabers on Tatooine, it’s tough to argue against her feeling of closure within the story. Despite what seemed like a firm response, Ridley went on to backtrack a bit and left the door open for a possible return.

“I mean, the world is a crazy place right now, 10 years seems an awfully long way away. I think never say never, but to me, Rise of Skywalker was tied up with a bow.”

This isn’t the first time Ridley has expressed her dissatisfied feelings towards the franchise, especially after having the time to reflect on her total experience while filming the trilogy. Ridley also isn’t the first actor from the sequel trilogy to express a lack of desire to return after their own experiences filming the generational blockbusters. Ridley’s fellow co stars Oscar Isaac and John Boyega, who portray fan favorite Resistance fighters Poe Dameron and Finn, have also shown that they have no immediate interest in returning to reprise their respective roles.

Unfortunately, it seems that most of the main cast members involved in this sequel trilogy did not enjoy the overall experience of being a part of the Star Wars saga. This news comes much to the dismay of the fans , as the cast‘s acting capabilities was widely viewed as one of the few redeeming qualities introduced to audiences by the set of films. In part , the divisiveness of the sequel trilogy can be attributed to some of the controversial creative decisions made , especially when it came to Rey and her character’s story.

Disregarding the quality of material given to work with, there are elements of Rey’s story throughout the sequel trilogy that will always feel under developed and controversial in the eyes of fans. Nonetheless, as time passes on, Daisy Ridley has become a role model and prominent voice for young women all over the world. Regardless of how fans view her Star Wars tenure, Daisy Ridley’s name will be etched into Star Wars lore forever, even if it appears her time with the role has reached its conclusion.
