Sonic the Hedgehog is currently the second biggest film of 2020–before 2020 began, no one would have predicted that. And now, Paramount has announced a sequel that will release April 8, 2022.
Director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are all returning to their respective positions. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara will be producing.
This specific videogame adaptation had an uphill battle to its success. The animators literally had to redo Sonic’s look, which resulted in the current well-received design accurate to the games.
The film has made $306 million worldwide before theaters shut down worldwide. Sonic will now be releasing to Chinese theaters on July 31st, which will undoubtedly add to its gross.
Despite the news of Sonic’s sequel announcement, there also comes the other news about film delays.
A Quiet Place Part II and Top Gun: Maverick have now moved to 2021, due to the current pandemic.
Paramount distribution heads Chris Aronson and Mark Viane released the following statement in regard to the delays:
“We truly believe that there is no movie-viewing experience like the one enjoyed in theatres. We are committed to the theatrical experience and our exhibition partners, and want to stress that we are confident that, when the time comes, audiences everywhere will once again enjoy the singular joy of seeing Paramount films on the big screen.”
John Krasinski‘s horror blockbuster sequel A Quiet Place Part II will now release on April 23, 2021.
July 2, 2021, will be the new release date of the long-awaited sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
