Upcoming “Obi-Wan” Disney+ Show Originally Planned as a Movie

Rumors of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s live action return were finally confirmed when President of Lucasfilm Kathleen Kennedy announced at D23 Expo 2019 that Star Wars prequel trilogy actor Ewan McGregor would be reprising his role for a show on Disney+. However, the Jedi master was originally supposed to make his return via the big screen with a movie according to a quote from McGregor while speaking with ComingSoon.net:

“It wasn’t always going to be a series, not initially. When we first started talking about, that wasn’t really in the cards but everything’s changed so much, so quickly. It’s really exciting that it is now. I’m really into the idea to be able to tell the story over several hours instead of just one hit. I think it’s going to be quite cool.”

The format change likely came after a disappointing box office performance from Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018. The currently untitled Obi-Wan series will feature six episodes of an hour in length written by Hossein Amini, directed by Deborash Chow, and will feature Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan. It will take place eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, and will focus on the Jedi’s secluded life on the desert planet Tatooine where he lives until the events of A New Hope. Filming will begin in 2020.
