Netflix’s MCU series will be geared towards an adult audience

From the tone of the trailers and the early reviews, the phrase “dark and gritty” is getting thrown around to describe Netflix’s Daredevil quite a bit. Judging from the source material, their AKA Jessica Jones will also be geared more towards adults than the other offerings to the MCU. Now, Mike Coulter, star of Netflix’s Luke Cage, has confirmed that his series will be darker in tone as well.

Though Luke Cage isn’t set to be released until next year, in a recent interview with IGN, Coulter was able to offer the following insight:

It’s geared towards an adult audience, which is something that will be different from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that you’ve seen before on the big screen… Marvel does a fantastic job about bringing human stories – because you’re telling big stories with a heart at the center of it – and that’s what connects all of the characters to our audience members. Audience members have to feel connected with these characters, to make them relate to the character’s situations and that’s what you see with all of the Marvel characters.”

Coulter is an accomplished actor, with roles in Academy Award winning films Million Dollar Baby and Zero Dark Thirty, and has played in other nerdy roles such as Halo: Nightfall. He’ll definitely be able to deliver a powerful performance.

I’m excited about playing the character because I’ve read the comic books. They’re very detailed, gritty; the world they’ve written in the comic books is very clear… What I’m most excited about is touching on what makes him tick. It feels good to get a character that has such a story, background, and history. And when I look at the scripts, I’m really pleased with it because it’s a slow-burn; there’s nothing happening really fast that gets ahead of itself. I’m really with where they’re taking it and how they’re developing the characters, because it’s really cool

I’m definitely excited to hear that Netflix is focusing on a more adult audience for their offerings to the MCU, and I’m hoping these will be more in line with a dark crime drama as opposed to the blockbuster action of the Avengers films.

We’ll get our first peak at what Netflix has to offer when Daredevil is released April 10th.
