Samsung’s new accessory, which was leaked a few days ago, has been announced officially. The Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch is a wearable Bluetooth phone accessory, complete with a 320 x 320 resolution AMOLED touchscreen interface, built-in camera, speakers, and two microphones with sound-canceling capability.
Presumably, this is so you can make phone calls while speaking into your sleeve like a secret agent.
The watch also will have 3rd-party app support, with developers such as Evernote and eBay planning on releasing applications for it. As of yet, the watch is only compatible for the Galaxy Note 3 and Note 10.1, although the upcoming update to Android 4.3 may bring compatibility to more devices.
Here’s a more complete list of what the specifications of the Smartwatch are:
– 800 MHz processor
– 2 microphones
– 1 speaker
– accelerometer and gyroscope
– 4 GB of memory
– 512 MB of RAM
– 1.9 Megapixel camera, with 720p video capability
– 1.63-inch Super AMOLED touch display
The watch will have app market somewhere in the neighborhood of 70+ apps at launch. It is expected to be available in the US in October at a price of $299. By the way, as I’m writing this, I’m listening to music off of my 6th-generation iPod Nano that I wear on my wrist with a watchstrap. Looks like you’re a little late to the game, Samsung.
