Is Matthew Vaughn a front runner for directing STAR WARS EPISODE VII?

Naturally thanks to the announcement that Disney bought Lucasfilm and is proceeding to make new Star Wars films starting with Episode VII a ton of rumors have appeared in regards to who is going to be directing the massive project that is Star Wars Episode VII.

Collider seems to think that they know who it is. As they say in their reveal, nothing is confirmed, but according to their report, the reason for the unexpected departure from X-Men: First Class was because director Matthew Vaughn might be in talks to direct this new Star Wars film.

I’m hearing that Matthew Vaughn, the director of Kick-Ass, Stardust, Layer Cake, and X-Men: First Class, is in talks with Lucasfilm to helm Star Wars: Episode VII. My sources tell me this is the main reason he dropped out of the X-Men sequel (which Bryan Singer is now directing).

Now if this is true, this is probably the biggest news of the year. On one hand, if Matthew Vaughn takes on this project, the franchise is in good hands. Matthew Vaughn is a tremendously talented director and a film like this could very well benefit from his skills.

However, the magnitude of a project like this can make or break someones career. If he takes the project and does it well, he will go down in history as the man who saved star wars. But if he fails, his career is shot.

Star Wars is one of the biggest and most recognizable franchises in the world, whoever taken on this project will have the whole world watching them. The idea alone is staggering, but I have my faith that if Matthew Vaughn takes on this project, he will make it work.

STAR WARS EPISODE VII is currently slated for a 2015 release.
