Over the weekend I took my son to see Wreck-It Ralph (which I absolutely loved by the way). Right as we were sitting down and getting situated, the previews started to roll. Like most kid movies there were no previews (except for The Hobbit) that really caught my eye. However, I was in for a huge surprise. Disney had placed another one of their wonderful short films before the feature presentation.

This one was simple black and white cartoon called Paperman.

Paperman was a wonderful 7 min long short film with a simple story about a man meeting a woman, then missing his chance, finding another, and then fate bringing them together. The short film itself blended traditional animation with computer animation to create this wonderfully authentic and unique feeling that I had never seen before.

The short caught me off guard. I was expecting to see some quick cute short, but what I got was this beautiful masterpiece of storytelling in its purest form.

At first I thought it was going to be a simple film, boy meets girl, boy falls for girl, and so on. But this time around, the lack of vocals and the heightened amount of beautiful music in the background seemed to work in its favor.

Apparently I wasn’t the only one in awe of this short film.  HitFix is reporting that Paperman might actually be a favorite for the nomination for the Oscar  for Best Animated Short.

And it deserves it.

Wreck-It Ralph is in theaters now, take the time to go see it, because if anything, this short alone makes the experience worth it.
