[RUMOR] Baron Zemo the real main villan of Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Now we all know the story of The Winter Soldier and the purpose of the tagline for the next Captain America movie… wait.. you don’t?

POTENTIAL SPOILERS FOLLOW

The Winter Soldier is basically a brainwashed and highly trained Bucky (Yes, Captain America’s best friend from the first film who seemingly died.) who got some crazy upgrades over the years. In the comics General Vasily Karpov and the crew of a Russian patrol submarine find Bucky’s cold-preserved body, minus one arm, revive him, give him a new bionic arm, and over time upgrade him whenever the technology improves enough to do so. Due to heavy amnesia, they basically programmed Bucky to be a Soviet assassin for Department X, under the code name the Winter Soldier. During his time as a Soviet agent, he also has a brief relationship with The Black Widow (who had no idea of his origins). While he was not on missions, he was kept young and fit thanks to constant  cryogenic stasis, hence why he seemingly hasn’t aged much since WWII.

Now the rumor that seems to have crept into quiet places of the internet like random cryptic twitter posts and hints in forums from supposed members of the production team seems to imply that not only is Bucky gonna come back as The Winter Soldier for this new film (obviously.. hence the tag line) but hes done so by order of the long time Captain America villain Baron Zemo instead of some random Russian general which would be used to help cut all ties to other comic characters (such as Wolverine from the X-Men) that the character had in the comic book run.

With all of this news aside, it has be confirmed that Samuel L. Jackson would return as S.H.I.E.L.D. head Nick Fury, Anthony Mackie has entered negotiations to actually star as The Falcon as an aid to Captain America in this sequel. Sebastian Stan was also reported to be reprising his role as James “Bucky” Barnes/The Winter Soldier. And now rumors are even suggest that Black Widow and Hawkeye are set to have roles in the film as well.

Now while this new development seems to have no current backing other than those random rumors, its hard to take it as anything but a rumor. What I can say is that if this is true, this would be a very cool twist and use of Captain America’s villains now that they fast forwarded the character and seemingly took out the possibility of having another WWII era Captain America film.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is currently slated to be released April 4, 2014.
