‘Chronicle’ Director Josh Trank To Direct SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS
Chronicle could easily be considered one of this years sleeper hits. A cast of unknowns, from an unknown director, with a tiny budget, ended up bringing us one of the freshest takes on the “found footage” and “Superhero” genres.
Its success didn’t go unnoticed.
Ever since Chronicle, rumors have been flying around about what Josh Trank would tackle next. From Chronicle 2, to Fox’s Fantastic Four reboot, even all the way to Sony’s Spider-man spin-off Venom, his name has been all over lately, and if the rumors are true, hes actually involved with both Venom and Fantastic Four after his next big picture for Sony, Shadow of the Colossus.
According to Deadline, Sony has hired Josh Trank to direct a film adaptation on the PlayStation 2 game of the same name created by Fumito Ueda, which according to them Trank had been such a huge fan of the game since it launched in 2005, that he actively sought out the job since it was first rumored to be in development.
With the announcement came this brief synopsis from Deadline;
The protagonist is a young man who thinks his lover has died. Desperate to bring her back, he heads into a forbidden land, and summons a demon who can wake the dead. The price for bringing back his girl: slay 16 colossi that dominate this mystical place. These are skyscraper-sized giants that rise from the ground, fly through the air and come from the water. As the young man works through his quest on horseback, he begins to wonder if he is on a noble pursuit to bring back his lover, or perhaps has made a deal with the devil and is being used.
For those unfamiliar with the game, since its release Shadow of the Colossus has been the topic of much debate in the argument of video games could ever be considered a form of “art”. While I absolutely loved the game and everything it consisted of, I have a hard time seeing a truly faithful adaptation of it given Hollywood’s track record with Video Game movies. But with the rumor that the games creator, Fumito Ueda, is actually going to be heavily involved in the films production, I think I’ll reserve my final judgement until any actual progress has been made.
