While not as shocking as the recent Ben Affleck is Batman news, this is still some pretty shocking news. It has been officially revealed by Marvel that actor James Spader (Stargate, Boston Legal, The Office) is going to be playing the titled villain in the upcoming sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the press release via Marvel.com<\/a>:<\/p>\n

James Spader will face off against Earth\u2019s Mightiest Heroes as the villain in Marvel\u2019s \u201cAvengers: Age of Ultron,\u201d the sequel to 2012\u2019s record-breaking \u201cMarvel\u2019s The Avengers.\u201d The Emmy Award-winning actor will play Ultron in the Avengers\u2019 much anticipated return to the big screen from writer\/director Joss Whedon. The film comes to theaters on May 1, 2015.\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/div>\n

Spader earned three Emmy Awards for his role as Alan Shore on \u201cBoston Legal\u201d and \u201cThe Practice,\u201d and will return to television this fall in NBC\u2019s highly anticipated series \u201cThe Blacklist.\u201d Most recently Spader was seen in the critically-acclaimed film \u201cLincoln\u201d directed by Steven Spielberg and has previously worked with a long list of accomplished film directors including David Cronenberg, Curtis Hansen, Sidney Lumet, Mike Nichols, Tim Robbins, Robert Rodriguez, Steven Soderbergh, and Oliver Stone.\u00a0 David Mamet also directed Spader in the Broadway play Race.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAvengers: Age of Ultron\u201d will bring the Marvel Universe\u2019s biggest heroes together again to face one of their biggest villains, with \u201cMarvel\u2019s The Avengers\u201d director Joss Whedon returning to write and direct the sequel. \u201cMarvel\u2019s The Avengers\u201d was released in 2012 and went on to earn $1.5 billion worldwide, making it the third-largest grossing movie of all time.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

With the current rumors hitting the web that unlike in the comics, Ultron will be created by Tony Stark as an adapted AI from JARVIS gone terribly wrong, this casting may turn into some of the most interesting news in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as of yet.<\/p>\n
