Over the years actor Patton Oswalt has made quite a name for himself in the nerd community. While most known for lending his voice in the Pixar film\u00a0Ratatouille<\/a>\u00a0and his more recent roles in Young Adult<\/a>\u00a0and the CollegeHumor Originals Short \u2013 Batman vs the Penguin<\/a>, the actor recetly became vocal on his facebook<\/a> page about the casting of Ben Affleck as Batman:<\/p>\n

No matter how many times you post your stupid \u201cFire Ben Affleck from Playing Batman\u201d petition, I\u2019m going to delete it and block you. Take a deep breath, and think for a second:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Yeah, the dude\u2019s made some bad films. Every actor has. Every actor does. Every actor will. It\u2019s a huge, arcing career and NO ONE has control over where it goes. Movie to movie, year to year, you\u2019re collaborating and trying and risking and, sometimes, yes \u2014 failing.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Plus, everyone seems to forget that he had the world dropped in his lap when he was YOUNG. And, judging by how other suddenly-famous youngsters do in the same situation, he fared pretty well. Even when it went wrong, he seemed to keep a self-deprecating, long-view philosophy about the burning freak carousel he\u2019d found himself on.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

And then what happened? I mean, he\u2019d fallen from a HEIGHT. You know what happens to 95% of people who weather a descent that steep? They come apart, fray at all of their sanity nodes, and give up.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

But then there\u2019s the 5% who embrace crushing defeat and see it for the gift it is. And here\u2019s the gift: when you fail, and fail UTTERLY, you wake up the next morning and see that the world didn\u2019t end. And then the fear of failure is gone. And you\u2019re free. You\u2019re free to proceed on your own terms and pace \u2014 if you have the ego that permits you to.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ben brushed himself off, realized he\u2019d kept his eyes open on the movies he\u2019d done, and started directing. And he\u2019s become a damn good one.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

A Batman portrayed by someone who\u2019s tasted humiliation and a reversal of all personal valences \u2014 kind of like Grant Morrison\u2019s \u201cZen warrior\u201d version of Batman, post-ARKHAM ASYLUM, who was, in the words of Superman, \u201c\u2026the most dangerous man on the planet\u201d? Think for a second and admit that Ben Affleck is closer to THAT top-shelf iteration of The Dark Knight than pretty much anyone in Hollywood right now.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n
