From its Golden Raspberry nominations to its universally derided script, <em>Batman and Robin<\/em> is often cited as the film that nearly destroyed the superhero genre. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But could a film be so bad that it&#8217;s actually\u2026good? Not according to our friends over at <em><strong>Through the Monocle<\/strong><\/em>, who suffered through the entire movie. Check out the full live commentary if you care to listen (and laugh) along with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, even <strong>George Clooney<\/strong>, who swore off ever reprising his role as the caped crusader again, came around to return as <strong>Bruce Wayne<\/strong> in <strong><em>The Flash.<\/em><\/strong> Twenty-six years later, is there any silver lining of redemption for <em>Batman &amp; Robin<\/em>? I think there is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bad, but not boring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/BatmanRobin.0.1422913774-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/BatmanRobin.0.1422913774-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/BatmanRobin.0.1422913774-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/BatmanRobin.0.1422913774-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/BatmanRobin.0.1422913774.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Batman &amp; Robin<\/em> is undoubtedly and objectively a bad movie. But it is not an <em>unwatchable<\/em> bad movie, and that&#8217;s an important distinction. Everything from the eye-popping ludicrous set designs to the oddball choices in dialogue to colorful costuming makes it uniquely captivating to watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who could forget <strong>Batman<\/strong> whipping out his Bat Credit Card to outbid <strong>Robin<\/strong> at an auction, complete with an expiration date of &#8220;Forever&#8221;? Or how <strong>Bane<\/strong> was reduced to a grunting, monosyllabic sidekick to <strong>Poison Ivy<\/strong> &#8211; a far cry from the intellectual villain he&#8217;s known to be in the comics. My personal favorite is when Batman and Robin &#8220;surf&#8221; down from the sky on doors ripped from a rocket ship, somehow managing to steer their way through the air with a finesse that defies all laws of physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The audacity of its bad decisions gives it a peculiar energy. Got a party where you want people laughing but not necessarily glued to the screen? <em>Batman and Robin<\/em> is your film. Its glaring flaws become part of its charm when the goal is amusement, not critical appreciation. Plus, the numerous ice-related puns from Arnold Schwarzenegger&#8217;s Mr. Freeze offer an easy drinking game that writes itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ironically, while the movie was initially designed as a vehicle to push toy sales, it will come full circle in 2023, with <strong>McFarlane Toys<\/strong> about to release an entire action figure line based on the film. And I&#8217;m willing to bet it will sell out. Whether fueled by nostalgia or affection for the film&#8217;s quirks, these toys affirm the movie&#8217;s lasting, albeit unconventional, impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sdcc-2023-mcfarlane-dc-multiverse-batman-robin-build-a-figure-wave-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sdcc-2023-mcfarlane-dc-multiverse-batman-robin-build-a-figure-wave-11.jpg 960w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sdcc-2023-mcfarlane-dc-multiverse-batman-robin-build-a-figure-wave-11-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/sdcc-2023-mcfarlane-dc-multiverse-batman-robin-build-a-figure-wave-11-768x504.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">DC Multiverse &#8216;Batman &amp; Robin&#8217; Action Figures Revealed at SDCC 2023<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, is <em>Batman &amp; Robin<\/em> a masterpiece? Absolutely not, but it&#8217;s far from a snoozer. It has carved out its niche as a cult classic that&#8217;s so bad it&#8217;s&#8230; well, still bad, but entertainingly so. The zany energy and sheer spectacle make it hard to ignore and impossible to forget. And now, with new toys on the horizon, this much-maligned movie is getting a second act. Whether we admit it or not, <em>Batman &amp; Robin<\/em> has solidified its place in pop culture\u2014frozen, you might say, in our collective memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What are your thoughts on Batman &amp; Robin?
