Today, Joel Burgess<\/strong>, Senior designer on Fallout 4<\/em>, revealed on Twitter<\/a> that River, the Dog that served as inspiration behind Dogmeat, had passed away. In the twitter thread, Joel Burgess reflects on what they were looking to accomplish with Dogmeat as a companion, and how River helped shape that idea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe was the antidote to my biggest worry for the Dogmeat character \u2013 a canine weapon, and nothing more.\u201d <\/p>via Joel Burgess’ twitter<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Dogmeat was envisioned as \u201cCompanion first, combat ally second.\u201d <\/em>He doesn\u2019t just help you fight enemies in the game, Dogmeat will also aid in finding items, and sticks with you no matter what choices you make in the story. This kind and helpful and caring nature was inspired by River\u2019s actual personality. Dogmeat even won an award<\/a>. Dogmeat was named Top Video Game Dog of 2015, in no small part thanks to River\u2019s Influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDogmeat is a tether. He grounds you in the world, will always stand by you, lead you to your family, anticipate your needs. He wants you to be safe and happy. He wants your to be safe and happy. In other words, he loves you. And if love is River’s legacy, I am contented. Rest in peace, big girl.
