The buyout is set to be in between the <strong>$8.5 billion-$9 billion<\/strong> range, and it would be Amazon&#8217;s biggest acquisition since it bought <strong>Whole Foods<\/strong> in 2017 for $13.7 billion. Amazon has been trying to strengthen the content of its streaming platform, <strong>Amazon Prime<\/strong>, in order to compete with the streaming giants like <strong>Netflix, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu,<\/strong> and even the newer ones like <strong>Paramount+<\/strong> and<strong> Peacock.<\/strong> It now seems the famous<strong> Leo the Lion <\/strong>will have a new home in Amazon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios <\/strong>was founded in 1924 by <strong>Marcus Loew<\/strong> and <strong>Louis B. Mayer.<\/strong> The company had been run by the families of the founders through the 20th century. Since then, it has had many different private funds owning the company, but if Amazon is able to complete the deal, it can be a game changer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/no-time-to-die-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/no-time-to-die-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/no-time-to-die-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/no-time-to-die-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/no-time-to-die-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/no-time-to-die-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/no-time-to-die-165x109.jpg 165w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MGM Studios would give Amazon an incredible boost of content to the streamer&#8217;s library, but it would also grant them the rights for some of the most popular intellectual properties in pop culture. Amazon would own the rights for the <em><strong>James Bond, Rocky\/Creed, Legally Blonde, The Pink Panther, <\/strong><\/em>and <strong>Stargate<\/strong> franchises. The studio also has great working relationships with filmmakers like <strong>Sylvester<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sylvester_Stallone\"> <\/a>Stallone<\/strong> and <strong>Ridley Scott<\/strong>. Upcoming productions from MGM include <strong>007&#8242;<\/strong>s <strong><em>No Time To Die <\/em><\/strong>and Scott&#8217;s <em><strong>House of Gucci <\/strong><\/em>releasing on <strong>October 8, 2021<\/strong> and <strong>November 24, 2021,<\/strong> respectively. They were also in production development for<strong><em> Creed III<\/em><\/strong>, with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/2021\/03\/mgm-confirms-michael-b-jordan-will-direct-creed-iii-with-a-thanksgiving-2022-release-date\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Michael B. Nevertheless, Amazon Prime has become a very interesting streaming service in the past years. They had a great run at this year&#8217;s<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/2021\/04\/93rd-annual-oscars-full-list-of-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong> Academy Awards<\/strong> <\/a>with <strong><em>Sound of Metal<\/em><\/strong> and<em><strong> One Night in Miami<\/strong><\/em>. This past month, Michael B.Jordan, himself, starred in the original <em><strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/theculturednerd.org\/2021\/03\/michael-b-jordan-lights-up-without-remorse-trailer-in-upcoming-tom-clancy-adaptation-from-amazon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tom Clancy&#8217;s Without Remorse<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, which is another IP franchise they own. They have high hopes for some of their upcoming films including <strong>Chris Pratt&#8217;<\/strong>s <em><strong>The Tomorrow War<\/strong><\/em>, the musical,<em><strong> Annette,<\/strong><\/em> directed by<strong> Leos Carax<\/strong> and starring <strong>Adam Driver<\/strong> with <strong>Marion Cotillard,<\/strong> and as well as <em><strong>The Tender Bar<\/strong> <\/em>directed by <strong>George Clooney<\/strong> and starring <strong>Ben Affleck<\/strong>. They own the rights to a number of popular reality TV shows like<em><strong> Shark Tank,  Survivor, The Real Housewives<\/strong><\/em>, and <strong><em>The Voice. <\/em><\/strong>MGM also owns the $1.3 billion valued premium pay-TV service, <strong>Epix<\/strong><em><strong>. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Initially reported by the <strong><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/amazon-nears-deal-to-buy-hollywood-studio-mgm-11621880759?mod=hp_lead_pos1\" target=\"_blank\">Wall Street Journal<\/a><\/strong>, the deal could be officially announced this week at the earliest. This follows reports that MGM had been searching for a buyer the past couple of years. The private, entertainment production\/distribution company is currently owned by Anchorage Capital, Highland Capital Partners, Davidson, Kempner Capital Management, Solus Alternative Asset Management and Owl Creek Investments. Most of the owners are private funds that took control of the studio after its 2010 bankruptcy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the MGM buyout from Amazon, we can say&#8230;the streaming wars have officially began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What do you think of the Amazon\/MGM deal?
